Local house, tech house and techno crew TECHPHONICS are on absolute fire at the moment, announcing quality guest acts left, right and centre. After a solid 2012 they show no signs of slowing down this year and have just announced French guru AGORIA will be joining them for their next party, playing an intimate club set in new party space Mr Kim’s.

Agoria started producing and releasing his own tracks in 1999 and first gained international recognition with a series of 12s on Pias Recordings in 2002, and followed by the acclaimed album Blossom a year later. Since then, Agoria has released three more long-players The Green Armchair (2006), soundtrack Go Fast (2008), and Impermanence (2011) all showcasing Agoria’s talent for creating deep, stripped-back, melodic, techno tracks.

In addition Agoria has compiled three mix-cds that present his unique ability in pairing tracks of very different origins and layering them in creative, sometimes even awe-inspiring ways. Deservedly so, Resident Advisor named his contribution to the At The Controls series from 2007 as one of the best mix-cds of the past decade. Agoria’s mixes on the well-known Balance and Fabric labels also sit proudly in many a music lover’s cd collection.

Check this rocking 2 hour set at Rock En Seine festival!:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aKlwVH6Xc4

TechPhonics proudly presents AGORIA on Friday 1st March at Mr Kim’s. Support from Carter Bros, Matt Abstrax, Joe Miller, Trav Bell and Gorgeous George.

The high quality sets of Spin DJ 2013 contestants continued last night with even more viewers than last week joining us to see four DJ acts go head-to-head to win a spot in the grand final.

It was yet another hard call to make for judges Skippy and Adam Daze, with Mister Bizkut, Rowzee, Trax & Stix and Rowzee all bringing their A-game and spinning close to flawless sets.

It was Weez who won the second round, the DnB selector smashing out a high-energy set that was absolutely seamless and featured several double drops.

Read on for Skippy’s notes notes on all contestants’ sets.

Weez
In a competition that has so far heavily featured plenty of gadgets and trickery, Weez proved that a solid set played on just two decks and a mixer is impressive enough to stand up to the bells & whistles of many of the other entries. Weez brought the fire from the get-go, opening with a double drop and instantly raising the energy levels with his heavy-hitting drum & bass selections. His set was mixed perfectly, featuring fast beatmatching and mixing; great use of the EQs, including swapping basslines; and plenty of double drops that melded two tracks into one. Weez never stopped moving during his set, jumping up and down, clapping his hands and clearly having a blast. Weez is a master of his craft and his set was practically perfect.

Mister Bizkut
Bizkut brought a great variety to his set in both selections and his skills. His selection included funky breakbeats, hip hop, house, drum & bass and some interesting mashup ideas, transitioning through several BPM ranges. The DJ formerly known as ANZAC definitely brought some tricks to the (turn) table(s) featuring some sweet cuts, some beat juggles and using a Korg padKontrol to trigger samples and cue points. Beyond just being a DJ set, Mister Bizkut definitely put on a fun performance, speaking to the audience with the mic, jumping around and even using elbows to stop records.

Trax & Stix
The combination of Matt Abstrax on the decks and PhilDdrumz on the drums was a good one with the pair’s styles working excellently together. Matt played a well-mixed set of pumping tech house and techno with some elements of trance and breaks thrown in to keep things interesting. Phil drummed nonstop throughout the set, changing between different sounds and styles while always complimenting Matt’s selections, such as drum rolls in the track build-ups and and inserting drum fills in the breaks of the tracks.

Rowzee
Rowzee told us how nervous he was to play but projected confidence as soon as he hit the decks. His beatmatching and mixing was spot-on with no noticeable errors at all. Rowzee created a sound of his own combining dirty electro house and Dutch house with UK bass, soca-style beats and even a few rave pianos.

Weez will be playing at the Spin DJ 2013 grand final at Sugar on Friday 1st March for his chance to win a set at Future Music Festival 2013 and prizes from event sponsors Fringe Benefits, Derringers Music, Inbound Records, Hills Cider and Little Creatures Brewery.

The second Spin DJ 2013 qualifying round featuring Dubrat, Josh Pathon, Lincoln Sayle and Rework’d will be broadcast live on Soundpond.net next Monday (15th February) from 8pm.

Spin DJ Comp 2013 is held by Soundpond.net with support from Future Music Festival, Fringe Benefits, Sugar Nightclub, Derringers Music, Inbound Records, Hills Cider and Little Creatures Brewery.

Spin DJ 2013 got off to an impressive start last night with hundreds of you tuning in to Soundpond.net for the first qualifying round to see the four acts compete for a spot in the grand final.

It was hotly contended, with Daniel Constantine, Bottle Rockets, Last Resort and Nik C all impressing us in different ways in their 30 minute sets.

It wasn’t an easy decision, but the winners of the first qualifying round are DJ/percussion duo LAST RESORT who impressed with an energetic set of house and breaks coupled with live drumming and sample triggering.

The sets were judged by Soundpond.net founders Skippy and Adam Daze. Read on for Skippy’s notes notes on all contestants’ sets.

Last Resort
Last Resorts’ set was very dynamic, with Jon and Rob taking it in turns to DJ and moving around to use the different gear: the CDJs, a Roland drum machine, an NI Maschine and a Kontrol X1 controller. The selection was great, with a selection of underground and more recognisable house tracks early in the set before lifting the energy levels even higher with a selection of breaks later on. Triggering recognisable acapellas over the top of the beats managed to strike a nice balance between playing credible club sounds and keeping the attention of those with more mainstream tastes. Rob’s timing on the drums was perfect and neither member missed a beat with the sample triggering. The guys had a strong presence in the studio and I’m looking forward to seeing them in front of a crowd!

Daniel Constantine
Daniel is an excellent producer and played a set mostly consisting of his own original productions and remixes. He really took me on a journey with his sounds, spanning deep house to dark, pumping techno and wonderfully crafting a unique vibe that was mysterious while also perfect for a dancefloor. Making use of many of the features available to him on a Denon MC3000 controller and Traktor Pro software, Daniel was mixing up to four tracks at a time, almost producing new pieces of music in the process.

Bottle Rockets
In a heat dominated by house music, Tim’s mash of booty beats, hip hop, rock, pop, retro and electro really made him stand out. It was a fast paced mix with plenty of mash ups. A stand out moment was mashing the acapella of Savage’s “Swing” with the piano chords of Regina Spektor’s “Laughing With”, creating a comical juxtaposition of emotions. Tim brought some great trickery into his set, using the cue buttons on his Novation twitch controller to perform some nice drumming and juggling.

Nik C
Nik had a great presence behind the decks, mixing competently and confidently. He knew his tech house tunes well and mixed them very solidy all on vinyl, with great use of EQ and chopping between tracks on the crossfader. Nik’s only mixing major error during his set only served to gain him points when he got two records back in time in a matter of seconds after a needle jump threw them out.

Last Resort will be playing at the Spin DJ 2013 grand final at Sugar on Friday 1st March for their chance to win a set at Future Music Festival 2013 and prizes from event sponsors Fringe Benefits, Derringers Music, Inbound Records, Hills Cider and Little Creatures Brewery.

The second Spin DJ 2013 qualifying round featuring Mister Bizkut, Rowzee, Trax & Stix and Weez will be broadcast live on Soundpond.net next Monday (8th February) from 8pm.

Spin DJ Comp 2013 is held by Soundpond.net with support from Future Music Festival, Fringe Benefits, Sugar Nightclub, Derringers Music, Inbound Records, Hills Cider and Little Creatures Brewery.

Thanks to everyone that sent in an entry for Spin DJ 2013. With the calibre of entries very high, it was a hard task but the twelve DJs/acts to progress to the qualifying round have been chosen! Over the next 3 weeks they will be battling it out on the Soundpond.net airwaves to secure their place in the grand final at Sugar on 1st March at and ultimately, their name on the Future Music Festival line up as well as an awesome prize pack.

Here’s how it’s gonna work.

Over the next three Mondays (4th, 11th and 18th February) from 8pm, four DJs will play a 30 minute set live on Soundpond.net. The judges favourite from each week will progress to the final. Of the nine remaining DJs/acts that didn’t win their heat, an additional finalist will be selected to join the final as a “wild card”.

The four finalists will play a 30 minute set each at Sugar on Friday 1st March, where the Spin DJ 2013 winner will be decided.

Let’s meet the qualifiers:

BottleRockets – BottleRockets made it to the final of Spin DJ 2011 as a duo. Now just a solo DJ act, BottleRockets still brings a frenetic house party mash of booty beats, hip hop, rock, pop, retro and electro.

Daniel Constantine – “My djing is very beatmix and layering orientated, mixing 2/3/4 tracks together as long as I can and as long as they work” says Daniel. More impressive still, his sets consist of ENTIRELY his own house and techno productions.

Dubrat – “To be honest I’ve never heard another DJ that goes in as deep or broad as me.” writes Dubrat. A bold claim, but after listening to cross-genre mix of new and fascinating sounds, we think we agree.

Josh Pathon – This producer/DJ provided a sweet mix of irresistible deep house grooves featuring several of his own productions. Very nice.

Last Resort – Spanning jackin’ house, electro and breaks, this duo definitely had us moving with their high energy set spiced up with live percussion.

Lincoln Sayle – Lincoln used 3 CDJs to deliver a set of solid electro and house he describes as “different”, “very mashy uppery”, “jazzy” and “pretty banging“.

Mister Bizkut – Mister Bizkut is a multi-genre specialist always on the lookout for that edgy surprise for the listener, bringing breakbeat mayhem with classic mashups and turntablist tendencies.

Nik C – Deep house, tech house and techno are Nik’s specialty and he mixes them solidly all on vinyl and with some nice chopping and trickery on the faders.

Rework’d – Playing across the house spectrum, this duo’s selection of disco, tech, progressive and electro includes feel good moments, big room drops and classic vocals.

Rowzee – Banging beats and heavy basslines to smash the club coupled with reggae and tropical rhythms. Rowzee definitely has a distinct style of his own.

Trax & Stix – Trax & Stix are a DJ/percussion duo with Stix drumming along to Trax’s selection of Funky tech house & techno, with influences of house, trance and progressive.

Weez – “I’m definitely a dance floor DJ” says DnB selector Weez. “There has to be a few good double drops and tracks that everyday punter will recognise as well as some fresh tracks for the heads”

Qualifying heats start on 8pm each Monday. Here are the dates:

4th February
Bottlerockets
Daniel Constantine
Last Resort
Nik C

11th February

Enter 2013. Enter the 6th Year of TechPhonics parties, and it’s set to be their biggest and best year yet. So who do they have lined up to start this new year with a mighty bang? Enter UK techno don LUKE SLATER. Luke has previously toured Oz destroying the massive Boiler Room (Big Day Out), once with a DJ set and once with his epic Freek Funk live set. What does Techphonics have in store this time round? Enter the PLANETARY ASSAULT SYSTEMS live show. Touring Australia for the first time under the P.A.S. guise, this will be Luke’s first ever club set in Adelaide. Join Techphonics as they rock the foundations of the Electric Circus basement, and their brand spanking new L’Acoustics line array system…

LUKE SLATER aka PLANETARY ASSAULT SYSTEMS
Luke Slater has been at the forefront of UK electronic music since the early ‘90s with a string of brilliant releases under a number of guises including Clementine, 7th Plain and Planetary Assault Systems. In 1996 Luke remixed Joey Beltrams ‘Forklift’ with the track quickly becoming an underground anthem and one of the most played tracks in the Adelaide techno scene, getting dropped at parties and clubs for many years.

After signing to Novamute in 1997, Luke dropped his groundbreaking album ‘Freek Funk’. This and the follow up 1999 album ‘Wireless’ were both released to critical acclaim and took Slater far beyond the confines of the techno scene. His “Fear & Loathing” mixes sit proudly amongst the collections of many music lover as do his enviable back catalogue of powerhouse techno tracks.

Fast forward to 2009 and Luke has burst back onto the scene as Planetary Assault Systems with his ‘Temporary Suspension’ album on Berlin’s ‘Ostgut Ton’ label. He’s been instrumental in reinvigorating the scene he helped create by bringing back techno’s traditional, purist values. The album kick-started a wave of P.A.S. live shows around the globe, followed by another album “The Messenger”, also on Ostgut Ton. Over 12 tracks of exploratory techno and electronica, Slater chases that fundamental wave – seeking new sounds while staying true to the original P.A.S. ideology and channelling an on-going search for new ground into cutting-edge modern music.

Let’s fire up as Luke Slater brings his epic Planetary Assault Systems live show to Adelaide and Australia for the first time!
