Spin DJ 2013 got off to an impressive start last night with hundreds of you tuning in to Soundpond.net for the first qualifying round to see the four acts compete for a spot in the grand final.

It was hotly contended, with Daniel Constantine, Bottle Rockets, Last Resort and Nik C all impressing us in different ways in their 30 minute sets.

It wasn’t an easy decision, but the winners of the first qualifying round are DJ/percussion duo LAST RESORT who impressed with an energetic set of house and breaks coupled with live drumming and sample triggering.

The sets were judged by Soundpond.net founders Skippy and Adam Daze. Read on for Skippy’s notes notes on all contestants’ sets.

We asked former Soundpond show host, Uberjakd, if he’d be keen to take over a 6 hour Monday night jam.  In just a few short years Uberjak’d has seen his productions take him to insane heights…now he has a fanbase to rival our entire station!  Voted #1 ITM SA DJ, #9 in AUS, signed to Ministry Of Sound, and gigs coming out of … everywhere, he’s doing “allright”.

Uber’s invited down the newly minted HYPE crew, and some friends.  A “who’s who” in all things club jackin, electro, dubstep styles.  Bollocks, Wellsaid, Rubberteeth, Dancespace, Dubdrop Deejays, Marek.  (Many of whom are also former show hosts).  This will be a jam you don’t want to miss if you like what you hear out in the clubs.  Check below for some samples, links, and more! This Halloween, DJ Riot Angel and his band of men will be digging through the darkest corners of their coffins to bring you a 6-hour mixed bag of tricks and treats.

The challenge (should they choose to accept) is to mix the unmixable – from J-pop and Trap to Horrorcore and Classical – and create Frankenstein’s monster of music genres. Combining each DJ’s unique style and personality, this Pond Jam will no doubt sound like nothing you’ve heard before.

Halloween Jam streams live with video on www.soundpond.net from 6pm – 12am Monday 29th October.

Adelaide is home of several independent labels to be proud of and Soundpond.net is always happy to let them take over our airwaves to showcase their sounds. Nostalgia Entertainment and Cuckoo Music have both hosted excellent Monday night Pond Jams in the past and now it’s time to hand over the reigns to another local label for the evening…

Pilot Records is an independent record label founded in Adelaide, Australia in 2012, also where the label is currently based. The label is most notable for releasing music of live electronic nature while maintaining the use of more traditional ‘band’ instruments such as guitar, bass, drums etc – something that the label likes to refer to as ‘hybrid electronic music’.

Upon founding the label, Pilot Records would abide by its mission statement: “Pilot Records strives to create and support original music of the highest quality composition and production, alongside the best in live entertainment – all the time drawing inspiration from the greatest artists, technologies and ideals from the past and the present to help the music industry maintain an original, exciting and innovative future for both recorded and live music.”

A selection of artists from the label’s roster, as well as the label’s owners, will be providing the sounds on Monday’s Pond Jam with a combination of live performances and DJ sets.

Pilot Records Jam streams live with video on www.soundpond.net from 6pm Monday 8th October.

Soundpond brings you one of the only known reasons to look forward to Mondays in the form of the Pond Jam, a 6 hour musical feast featuring some of Adelaide’s favourite DJs given the freedom to play the sounds they love. Variety being the spice of life and all, we aim to bring you different styles of music each week. This week John Spencer put his hand up to organise a whole evening of glitchy and wonky beats.

The Glitch/Wonky Jam streams live with video on www.soundpond.net from 6pm Monday 1st October.

Run the trap? Damn son where did you find this? It’s a Trap?

Trap is a buzzword that has been flying about quite a bit recently but what exactly is it? We think music blog Stoney Roads puts it pretty concisely:

The origin of the Trap genre is characterized by an aggressive attitude in sound, incorporating brass, triangle, snappy snares and hi hats, loud kicks, and booming 808′s from the Southern Crunk scene. Traditionally speaking, rappers like Waka FlockaYoung JeezyLex Luger and Gucci Mane would be classified as the original sound of Trap, however, the genres recent evolution has seen the popularity of techno and dub sounds incorporated more significantly into the overall trending sound.
